The longest part of the intestine is the small intestine (6-7 m). This is where most of the nutrients from food are absorbed. If the small intestine were a smooth tube, its surface area for this task would be only about half a square meter. However, folds, villi, and microscopic cellular protrusions increase the surface area of the small intestine, giving the entire intestine an area about the size of a 1-room apartment (30-40 m2).
